According To The Book
ACCORDING TO THE BOOK
a publishing life

by Roger Jones

In 1979 Roger Jones wrote and self-published a book about the town of Newton Abbot in South Devon where at the time he served as librarian. The following year he moved to Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire to run Ex Libris bookshop and fell into the habit of annually writing and publishing a book. These small, local ventures into the glamorous world of publishing proved to be fun, profitable and somewhat addictive, despite the occasional pitfall. Wannabee authors began to approach Ex Libris with their precious manuscripts whilst, at the same time, Roger began to spot gaps in the market and to approach likely authors. Thus Ex Libris Press grew and developed a diverse list of books on mostly West Country subjects and country life. 1992 witnessed the launch of Seaflower Books, a list dedicated to books on all aspects of the history and heritage of the Channel Islands. At the same time Ex Libris Press began assisting individuals and societies to self-publish books. In the near four decades since that first small book on Newton Abbot Roger Jones has, via his various imprints, published more than 300 titles. From cut and paste page make-up to desk-top publishing, from litho to digital printing, from local independent bookshops to the advance of the chains and the internet, According to the Book is an individual account of the fast developing world of publishing from the perspective of a one-man-band in a small provincial town.
